Your Eye Test

Your eye test at Charlestown Eyecare is a collaborative experience where we have plenty of time to listen to your needs, wants, concerns and difficulties to ensure that we recommend the best solutions to your ocular and visual needs.

Depending on your prescription, we may even go out of the practice to ensure any visual correction we have suggested is perfect for viewing the Charlestown scenery.

What happens at an Eye Test?

An eye test at Charlestown Eyecare will begin with a conversation about what you’re hoping to achieve, whether that be clearer vision, a fabulous new look or simply a review of your eye health. We will discuss relevant symptoms, your ocular history, any glasses or contact lenses that you currently use, along with asking about your general health and medications as there can be ocular side effects that we would be on the look out for.

We will also ask you about things you like to do, and get an idea of how you work – the setting and set up – to ensure we think about the best lenses and prescription to make your vision as comfortable as possible for all of the things you do.

You will have an assessment of your vision as it currently is, an examination of your eyes both inside and out with microscopes, and OCT scans and photographs of the inside of your eyes. We will check your eye pressures without using any puffs of air as we know this is often the bit of the test people dislike the most.

We will then check for a prescription that could be incorporated into any glasses, sunglasses or contact lenses.

Finally, we will have a discussion about what types of lenses would be recommended for you, your lifestyle and different uses of glasses or contact lenses.

Occasionally we may write to your GP if there is something we have found that they should know about.

How long will your eye test take?

An eye test at Charlestown Eyecare will take approximately 40 minutes, we always suggest allowing at least an hour and sometimes longer so that you get plenty of time to choose new glasses without any time pressure.

Some people choose to come back to organise their new glasses on another day.

How often do I need an eye test?

Most people should have an eye test once every 2 years in the absence of symptoms or conditions that their optometrist is already monitoring. This thorough examination of your eyes checks the overall health and can spot signs of certain eye conditions long before you may be symptomatic.

People that are being monitored for a condition should attend as often as their optometrist recommends. Anyone who feels their vision has changed or they have concerns about their eyes should call 01726 66669 for advice on how promptly they should be seen.

For patients on our eye care plan, eye test appointments can be as often as needed, all covered by one monthly payment.

Children’s Eye Test

An eye test for a child should normally be done around the age of 3 or 4, before they begin school, and every year or two thereafter. However, tests can be done at any age from birth. Parents with concerns about their children’s eyes or vision should arrange for them to see an optometrist to check out any concerns.

We aim to make a child’s eye test fun and informative, discussing things with you and your child where appropriate. The test will follow a similar format to that of an adult, but sometimes we will do different tests and in different orders to keep your child’s attention.
