What is Myopia?
Myopia is more commonly known as ‘short sight’, it means that the light is not focusing on to the retina at the back of the eye and the vision can normally be improved with glasses or contact lenses.
Short sight often runs in families and is generally increasing in prevalence due to periods of time being spent indoors, or on digital devices.
As myopia progresses, the prescription for glasses becomes stronger to allow clear vision as the length of the eye is often increasing.
This increase in length of the eye can pose a risk of of macular degeneration, retinal detachment and glaucoma, amongst other things, as we get older.
It is thought that time outdoors in daylight hours and the use of special contact lenses or glasses can slow down the increase in myopia.
What is Myopia Management?
Myopia management is the regular monitoring of any increase in myopia, and the dispensing of special types of glasses and contact lenses designed to slow the progression. The gold standard of myopia management may include the use of eye drops to relax the focus of the eye, or the measuring of the axial length of the eye.
